If you loved "Gilmore Girls" and haven't yet watched "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," what are you even doing? "Maisel" shares much of the same DNA as everyone's quintessential fall favorite, but the budget is higher, so many scenes are actually shot on location. Instead of suffering through a SoCal beach masquerading as New England, spend time in NYC, Paris, Miami, and the Catskills. Enjoy beautiful set and production design, costumes, hair and makeup, the whole shebang. The show may be set in the late 50s/early 60s, but the soundtrack is still fantastic and even includes some Palladino mainstays (Bowie, XTC, the Go-Go's) during the end credits.
Other similarities include the leads, Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) and Susie (Alex Borstein, AKA Miss Celine and Drella), who are both complicated, "difficult" women with a relationship so close, it's inspired heaps of sapphic fanfic. The families — Maisels, Weissmans — are just as charmingly dysfunctional as the Gilmores. The men are hot in that "Who hurt you?" kind of way, and the side characters rival Babette and Miss Patty at their kookiest. You'll laugh, you'll cry... because you're laughing so hard. Join me, won't you?
